Shelterbox Scavenger Hunt
|
|
The ShelterBox Trust is a
registered UK charity that provides emergency aid for victims of natural and other disasters anywhere in the
world.
|
As part of their "Big Green Box Week", they held a Scavenger Hunt in London. The event was to raise awareness
of the charity, and to mark the beginning of their partnership with the Scout Association. Teams of 3-5 Scouts
met onboard HMS President, where they were given maps, clues and a big green box. The teams then had to walk
around the city carrying the box and answering the questions.
It was a hot sunny day, and although the box was empty it was still an extra burden on the way round. We could
really emphasize with the teams that completed the two-day event on Dartmoor with a box weighing 30kg! We
followed the clues, carrying our box as we went. Where we could we photographed the box in an unusual place,
and every now and then we met another team of Scouts with their box.
When we stopped for lunch at Covent Garden, we checked the route and realised that there was still a long way to
go and wondered about cutting the course short to enable us to get back at the agreed time. After lunch at
Horseguards Parade we met another group who said that we really ought to get to Victoria Station, so we decided
to aim to get there at least, and then take a tube back.
At Victoria we met more volunteers from Shelterbox who were running a publicity stand, which included a painted
picture of an earthquake on the concourse. We had out photo taken and then sped back on the tube to the HMS
President, where we had a drink and were given T-shirts and balloons. The Scouts were very tired and quiet on
the train and bus journey home, but they had all had fun and learnt about the charity and the work it does.
Keep an eye out for future fundraising events in aid of Shelterbox.
