| 3rd March 2010 - Visit from Bucks Search and Rescue |
As part of our theme for the term (Be prepared... for action), and also to count towards the
Community Challenge, we had a visit from three members
of Bucks Search and Rescue.
The Scouts learned all about what BSAR do, and lots of useful information about what to do if you find yourself in
various situations. They also carried out a brief search outside and discovered more about how BSAR deal with
incidents.
Those Scouts that would like to use this evening towards their Community Challenge will need to write a brief report about the evening, explain what
they have learned about Bucks Search and Rescue and their activities in the local community.
There is more information on the Bucks
Search and Rescue website.
Reports from the Scouts:
Bucks Search & Rescue
On the 3rd of March Bucks Search & Rescue came to 1st Great Missenden scouts. They talked to us about their jobs
- here's what they did in more detail.
They taught us about the colour lights on planes & boats. On a boat you have port, the light on that side is
red and starbord, the light is green and at the front the light is clear. So now if your lost at sea you know
which way a boat is going.

Next they showed us some of the kit they carry, they had this rope that is designed to float so if someones
drowning you throw it up stream and let it float down so it goes to the person. They also had a floatation
device which I tried on myself, I asked them why isn't it called a life jacket, they said 'because it isn't
anything like a life jacket because it also protects you'.
Altogether we had a very enjoyable night. Thankyou for coming Bucks Search & Rescue Team.

The visit from Bucks Search and Rescue (otherwise known as the BSAR) was really fun. They told us how people volunteered and went on training courses to deal with all sorts of things. For example if someone went missing they would be called out to search for them. The BSAR have been known to do all sorts things such as clearing buildings where there is a radiation risk. When they came to the scout hut I was really excited. They showed us the type of kit they used in contaminated buildings. We then did some activities. On the first we went outside and were looking for a girl who had gone missing. We spread out and searched the ground. First we found a rucksack containing a Winnie the Pooh toy and then we found a shoe (the shoe was really difficult to find). Then we went inside and learnt all about the lights that are used on ships and planes. We were told some funny sayings to remember them like: There is no PORT (the drink) LEFT in the bottle. On ships Port is left. Also: PORT is RED is LEFT. As Port is Red it corresponds with the red light in the left side of the ship. After that activity it was time for them to leave. I had a great time when Bucks Search and Rescue came to visit and I can't wait for the next visit.
